Harold Ballard's breaking point came in the sixth grade.

John Lively was a mouth-breather that no one cared about, an over-sized sixth grader voted most likely to see jail. In Harold's opinion, God had wasted a body on John Lively.

Harold was a curious loner that sat in the back of the classroom. Unlike John's family, Harold's parents loved him. They just didn't have time for him. They spent days in the basement working on something that would change the world. Sometimes they were down there for weeks.

Harold was tired of being forgotten and pushed around. So he pushed back.

That day would change the world.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

HOW IMPORTANT ARE NAMES TO YOU IN THIS BOOK. DID YOU CHOOSE THEM BASED ON SOUND OR MEANING?
Almost all of my books have names with special meaning, some foreshadowing a big twist. In The Annihilation of Foreverland, Reed’s name was symbolic of his ability to tolerate suffering, bending in the face of gale forces but never breaking.

WHERE DOES YOUR TOMORROW SPRING FROM? IN OTHER WORDS, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CRAZY WORLD?
Sometimes, I can’t remember how the story started by the time I get to the end. The Annihilation of Foreverland started with the premise of identity. I wanted to write it as a YA book in the science fiction dystopia genre in a way that slowly unfolded as well as questioned who we are and explore our fear of death, and what we’re willing to do to avoid it. Like all of my stories, it does have a romantic angle mixed into the action. Because it should.

GIVE YOUR BOOK THE BECHDEL TEST. IT HAS TO HAVE AT LEAST TWO (NAMED) WOMEN IN IT WHO TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT SOMETHING BESIDES A MAN.
I failed because there’s only one female in The Annihilation of Foreverland. However, the young adult sequel (Foreverland is Dead) passes with flying colors since its mostly female characters that rarely talk about men.

WHAT SORT OF BODY COUNT ARE WE TALKING HERE?
The bodies die, but not necessarily the characters. Chew on that a second.

DO YOU WANT YOUR TOMORROW TO MAKE IT BIG, AS IN JK ROWLINGS-BIG? WHY OR WHY NOT?
Believe it or not, no. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to make enough cash to pay off this house and send my kids to college, but I’ll pass on fame and fortune. Anonymity is a blessing.

YOU CAST YOUR CHARACTERS FOR A MOVIE. WHO MAKES IT?
In The Annihilation of Foreverland, I only casted two characters in my head while I was writing it. The Director is Jeff Bridges and Mr. Jones is Anthony Hopkins. It was like watching a movie as I wrote.

HAVE YOU WRITTEN IN ANY OTHER GENRES BESIDES YA DYSTOPIAN? WHAT DREW YOU TO YOU THIS GENRE?
I’ve been fascinated by consciousness, identity and what this all means since I was young. I would read my grandfather’s science fiction books with elements of artificial intelligence and alternate realities and wonder what happened when they died? I suppose that’s why all of my writing deals with the big mysteries of life in one way or another. In a way, I write for my own exploration, in a sort of thought experiment approach, pulling apart our identities, exploring what makes us who we are. If I lost my memories, would I still be me? If I had my body parts replaced with synthetic replications, at what point would I not be me? Do I even need a body?

What am I?

A few years ago, I figured I’d write a romance novel. Since all of my books have a romantic element, I thought it would be fun. Halfway through the novel, I found myself thinking more and more about the next project—a dystopian idea. So 40,000 words in, I scrapped the romance novel and got back to what I love. Science fiction.

Seeds of Foreverland A Science Fiction Thriller edition by Tony Bertauski Children eBooks

I love the Foreverland novels, so I was intrigued to find a prequel novella, and eager to read. This story stands alone though and will work just as well for readers unfamiliar with the series. It’s a truly dark tale, in Stephen King style, of a misfit child in a broken family watching his world fall apart.

Scenes of childish cruelty are grotesque, maybe even disturbing. But more disturbing is the mystery of a mother, increasingly missing, a scientist father, locked cellar doors, the neighbor’s gun, and the brooding self-destruction of the young protagonist. Foreverland is almost cleanly scary compared to this haunting tale which, like all Bertauski’s novels, takes us just that tiny step out of our real-world comfort-zone into something wildly thought-provoking and different. It's a cool, very scary read.

Seeds of Foreverland A Science Fiction Thriller edition by Tony Bertauski Children eBooks Reviews

I was quite disappointed. I wasn't hooked by the characters and never felt as if I knew them. The story line is surprising and will be a good series. I just hope gets more well defined.
A quick read that takes a great look at Harold's childhood and the work his parents started that he would later take further in the rest of the books in the series. Harold is a bad guy but this makes us feel for him a bit knowing how awful his childhood was. This was such a fantastic series and this novella is just a little bonus to read after the main series. Love it.
So this is one of those books where you just want the lead character to have a happy ending. Poor Harold just slipped through the cracks and was unable to catch a break. Certain things in his life( I won't spoil it for you) caused him to be a little odd and this gave his bully ample reason to pick on him. All I will say is this book is worth the time. This is the second book from the Foreverland series and I look forward to more.
Seeds of Foreverland The Prequel, A Science Fiction Thriller by Tony Bertauski is a compelling story. I gave it five stars.

"Flies are stupid.

They were drawn to windows like addicts, pounding their brains against a pane of glass until they died on the windowsill, their short, useless lives spent wishing for freedom but never finding it."

Harold is a precocious twelve-year-old sixth grader whose mother is ill. He's tormented by John, the school bully. "John sat like a heap of mouth-breathing flesh, waves of stupid beaming all the way through the scope."

I received a complimentary copy from . That did not change my opinion for this review.

As a child we tend to see and understand things differently. As we grow we find that many of the lessons we learned as a child follow us to adult hood, whether good or bad is up to the learner and how they are used. Tony Bertauski takes those lessons and many more, giving them life in a form that at this point can only be dreamed. As the characters in this book they re all well defined and this is just the beginning of the series. It gives you a little light to where it all started and how each character plays their part in the rest of it. Great read and even better series!!!
I had no idea what to expect from this book; no preconceived notions based on the description. This story has several layers that are not immediately apparent. I don't believe in spoilers, so I will not try to summarize the meat of the tale, but I was not immediately aware that the surface story was going to turn out not to be the main focus. While obviously the basic story is a part of the book, the reader is ushered quickly through to the underlying parts that on one level should have been easily deduced, but the surface story had enough angst and activity to keep the reader's attention while the main idea was cleverly hidden, much as a magician uses misdirection to keep his audience's attention away from what he is doing with his other hand. I will certainly be acquiring the series to which "Seeds of Foreverland" is only the prelude. Although I am sure it would be all right to start with the first book of the series, I believe this prequel gives great depth to the rest of the story... and I haven't even read it yet!
Harold is a precocious twelve-year old, fitting into a mold of a pudgy, smart, geek kid. Harold is picked on by the class bully and his sidekick and dreams about short- and long-term revenge. He has also tons of problems on the home front, with cold, removed neurosurgeon/cyberneticist father and an ailing, disfunctional mother. Both parents leave him to his own devices for weeks on end while they are cooking something dark and mysterious in the basement. Harold thinks they are trying strange experimental cures for his mother's illnes (early Alzheimer's?), but something more sinister is afoot. At this point I decided to stop telling the story. Why spoil the surprises for others? I really enjoyed reading this short book. The prose is fluent, idiomatic, insightful and despite the dark plot, somewhat humorous. The author masterly gets the reader into the world of Harold and makes one identify with his angst and despair, as well as the few small fleeting triumphs. Harold is not a likable kid, but he is very real. One gets the feeling of something between Lord of the Flies (Piggy) and Lucky Jim. This is an enormous compliment for Mr. Bertausky. So why only four stars? Largely because the SciFi side of the book is weak and detracts from the story of Harold. I would have loved to see how Harold grows into a genius, a sociopath, a delinquent? How he deals with the world filled with violence and sex as an adult? How is our society going to cope with a square peg in a round hole? In a word, I was hoping to read another "The Magician" (by Sol Stein, 1971, The Magician highly recommended). At some future date Mr. Betrausky might dump the SciFi scene and finish a really great novel. I'm waiting.
